Cult comic actor Steve Carell--long adored for his supporting work on The Daily Show and in movies like Bruce Almighty and Anchorman--leaps into leading man status with The 40 Year-Old Virgin. There's no point describing the plot; it's about how a 40 year-old virgin named Andy (Carell) finally finds true love and gets laid. Along the way, there are very funny scenes involving being coached by his friends, speed dating, being propositioned by his female manager, and getting his chest waxed. Carell finds both humor and humanity in Andy, and the supporting cast includes some standout comic work from Paul Rudd (Clueless, The Shape of Things) and Jane Lynch (Best in Show, A Mighty Wind), as well as an unusually straight performance from Catherine Keener (Lovely & Amazing, Being John Malkovich). And yet... something about the movie misses the mark. It skirts around the topic of male sexual anxiety, mining it for easy jokes, but never really digs into anything that would make the men in the audience actually squirm--and it's a lot less funny as a result. Nonetheless, there are many great bits, and Carell deserves the chance to shine. --Bret Fetzer

Review
Judd Apatow's directorial debut, The 40-Year-Old Virgin accomplishes something very rare for a comedy, it is a very funny, bawdy sex comedy that transcends the genre because of the three-dimensional characters and the subtle acting. Steve Carell created his character while part of Chicago's Second City troupe, and like all of the best sketches they produce, the laughs come more from the human behavior of the characters than in the situation itself. Carell's pitch-perfect performance is matched by Catherine Keener who creates a warm, appealing, intelligent woman who would believably fall for Carell's character. All the supporting players (Paul Rudd, Seth Rogan, Jane Lynch, and the rest) are given fully realized characters to play, making the outrageous behavior even funnier because the audience can relate to the people even if the actions seem outlandish. The screenplay is both full of big laugh lines and works as a perfectly structured romantic comedy. In lesser hands, this would have become a one-note comedy, but The 40-Year-Old Virgin is a comedy symphony. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

Adult comedy4
This movie is surprisingly funny, and is easily one of my favourites. The comedy is nearly adolescent, but never juvenile, and is saved by a remarkably sophisticated charm. If you were an adolescent during the 1970s and/or 1980s, you'll absolutely appreciate much of the humour; however, I think if you are a younger person you might have trouble "getting" what is so funny about this movie. The performances by Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and Seth Rogan are excellent (hilarious), and Jane Lynch (Best of Show, For Your Consideration) easily steals the scenes in the electronics shop where much of the movie takes place. If you liked "Ron Bergundy" Anchorman," you will like this movie. It is the sort of squirming comedy that makes you laugh and groan at the same time. I was prepared to dislike the film the first time I saw it, and was very surprised at how very funny it is.

The above guy must watch a lot of CBC dramas5
This movie was very funny. Not suitable for kids, but hey it isn't disney. The nice thing is that there are surprises throughout, and the ending is not what you could ever expect.

Well worthwhile to watch.
