Churchill grew up immersed in the last years of the English Civil Army, craving a career in the army. As a young man, he became embroiled in the colorful court of Charles II, initially serving the Duke of York and later becoming the lover of Lady Castlemaine. This liaison was to set him up financially forever.

He rose rapidly through the ranks of the army, serving in numerous lengthy foreign campaigns, but his true genius emerged in the War of the Spanish Succession, at the famous Battle of Blenheim (1704). Even Napoleon studied the Duke Of Marlborough's innovative tactics.
