Dreamland is Robert Plant's first solo album--in name at least--for nigh on a decade. Plant's latest backing band--who toil under the slightly naff cabaret-circuit moniker of Strange Sensation--have a lithe and serpentine approach to fusing American revivalist folk with the blues and modernist alt-rock (Plant even namechecks the Flaming Lips as an influence)--all this in spite of the fact that they are drawn from such non-Kerrang!-subscribing musicians as Porl Thompson (The Cure), Justin Adams (Jah Wobble), Clive Deamer (Portishead) and John Baggott (Portishead, Massive Attack). Occasionally, this spontaneity finds them following their investigative noses down a blind alley--"Hey Joe", for all its free-form psychedelia, has "jam session" written all over it--but these trifling shortcomings are eclipsed by the hauntingly meditative "Morning Dew" (Bonnie Dobson's flicker of light in the darkness of 1960's nuclear war neurosis) and terrifically reinterpretative versions of familiar standards and neglected jewels, particularly Tim Buckley's "Song to the Siren" (with warm Arabian strings) and an Anglicised-roots-via-heavy-rock shuffle through Bukka White's "Fixin' To Die". Often, covers albums are rot-stopping attempts to stall for time issued by dried-up "has-beens" but Dreamland exudes devil-may-care, barrier-smashing self-belief. --Kevin Maidment

Si cet album se présente un peu comme un disque de reprises, il ne s'agit pas de le considérer comme l'exercice prévisible d'un rocker sur le retour d'âge. L'éternel ancien chanteur de Led Zeppelin n'a d'ailleurs pas retenu – à une exception près – de titres du grand patrimoine. Et c'est justement cette exception qui caractérise bien l'ambition du projet. En donnant à l'inusable "Hey Joe" un habillage dramatique, il intensifie le caractère de cette tragédie meurtrière que raconte la chanson. Nous avons sans doute là la version la plus poignante du classique immortalisé par Jimi Hendrix. Toutes les forces semblent tendues au service de l'histoire que raconte la voix pleine d'émotion de Plant. On ressent la même force dans une de ces compositions comme "Red Dress", ou dans son adaptation étrange de "One More Cup Of Coffee", de Bob Dylan. Et c'est là que l'on perçoit l'intensité et l'ambition de ce disque. Un vrai travail collectif, avec des hommes qui ne recherchent pas nécessairement les lauriers, mais qui s'attachent au plus juste à faire exploser ces chansons. Les blues, contenus dans "Win My Train For Home", sont en fait un prétexte pour le groupe à expérimenter, en mêlant ambiant et vocaux plus classiques – à la façon de Moby – le registre blues, plus qu'à le respecter à la lettre. Rien ne paraît inaccessible, dès lors qu'on choisit de l'aborder avec un œil neuf, semble affirmer chaque plage de cet album. Le résultat reste convaincant. --José Ruiz

great solo work!
this is a very majectic album and i love this style of robert's music. I love Darkness, Darkness..awesome job!

This CD is one of his best solo efforts in MANY years!
The music is rich in sound and makes you want to wear headphones at night with no distractions. I recently started playing all my older Plant CDs and then found this one at the store and was BLOWN AWAY. Yes it's mainly cover songs but the production values are well worth the listen, and he does justice to Dylan's One More Cup of Coffee from the Desire album (my fave Dylan album). Morning Dew is a sad but beautifully done song, and Plant's interpretation of Hey Joe is quite different from the one we're used to ala Hendrix but if listened to on its own merits it is still very good, relying more on Plant's voice to build it up with the music mainly keeping the beat and rhythm until the lengthy bridge section then it goes very Led Zeppelin. All in all an excellent CD well worth taking time away from everyone and dusting off that big old set of headphones you may have laying around somewhere.
