Blue Underground fires off another retro rocket from the dinosaur days of cable TV with a second round of Midnight Blue, a compilation of interviews and shenanigans from the eponymous (and infamous) '80s-era cable access show. Hosted by Screw publisher Al Goldstein, Midnight Blue invited mainstream and adult celebrities alike to discuss their lives and lusts with uncensored abandon. The focus on this disc is XXX stars from the '70s and '80s, including Marilyn Chambers, Georgina Spelvin, and Annie Sprinkle, each of whom discuss their sex lives on and off the set in unsparing detail, with Goldstein offering a mix of slobbery compliments and frank questions. Viewers are also treated to footage of stars like Seka and Veri Knotty performing their stage acts (Ms. Knotty's routine is not for the faint-hearted), and Georgina Spelvin recreates her snake dance from The Devil in Miss Jones. Though the interviews and on-location footage (which includes visits to a film set and a trip to the notorious Plato's Retreat in New York) is for the most part smutty, Goldstein does offer the performers a forum to speak frankly about their chosen professions, and even sound off on various grievances. For classic adult-film fans, this peek behind the scenes is fairly priceless, especially seeing how it hasn't been available for viewing since its original broadcast; the supplemental feature is an optional pop-up trivia text track that offers a barrage of info on the DVD's subjects. --Paul Gaita

The second volume in New York After Midnight's series of Midnight Blue compilations improves on its predecessor, both in terms of historical value and entertainment value. Midnight Blue, Vol. 2: Porn Stars of the 1970s offers a pretty interesting array: from superstars like Marilyn Chambers to lesser-knowns like Veri Knotty, there is something here to appeal to anyone interested in the topic. All the interviews are revealing (in both senses of the word), with Seka and Marilyn Chambers coming off as the most intelligent and articulate interview subjects. Even more interesting is a brief segment devoted to Marc Stevens and Helen Madigan, two stars who left the adult film world on a bitter note: their weary remarks show the dark side of the business. Fans of Midnight Blue will also appreciate the many adults-only commercials included between segments, including many ads for the legendary swingers' haven Plato's Retreat. In short, Midnight Blue, Vol. 2: Porn Stars of the 1970s is a phenomenally entertaining time capsule for both veteran fans and casual viewers looking for a 1970s-oriented thrill. ~ Donald Guarisco, All Movie Guide
