The sci-fi broadcast series Godannar (2003) is set in the not-too-distant future, five years after the alien Mimetic Beasts attacked Earth. Although they were supposedly defeated, at least one appears in every episode. Seventeen-year-old Anna wants to be a mecha pilot, so she can join her new husband Goh in fighting the Beasts. She gets her chance when the Neo-Okusaer robot rises out of a graveyard: with Anna at the helm, it successfully fuses with Goh's mecha to form Godannar, an über-robot that can beat the sashimi out of any Mimetic Beast. In between monster attacks, misunderstandings arise between the pneumatic females in the cast and the largely ineffectual males. Director Yasuchika Nagaoka moves everything at a frantic pace, trying to disguise the characters' utter lack of personalities. Godannar plays like an unsuccessful attempt to blend Evangelion, Bubbblegum Crisis, and Daphne in the Brilliant Blue: even the mecha jiggle in some shots. It's strictly for fans of big-eyes-big-breasts-big-guns anime. (Rated TV MA, suitable for ages 16 and older: Nudity, violence, tobacco use) --Charles Solomon
