Editorial Reviews

From Amazon.com
Mahogany Soul perfectly describes the rich, deep, and lived-in music Angie Stone makes. This veteran singer/songwriter, who was one-third of rap trio Sequence, led acid-jazz combo Vertical Hold, and had a major hand in creating D'Angelo's Brown Sugar, follows up 1999's critically acclaimed Black Diamond with another collection of grown-up R&B that's sexy, satisfying, and smart. Along with (wo)manning the helm herself, Stone links up with like-minded visionaries. Chief among them are Raphael Saadiq, who produced the single "Brotha," which moves with a purposeful, rugged, old-soul swagger, and Andrea Martin, coproducer with Swizz Beatz on the vibrant and aching "Wish I Didn't Miss You," which features a dope "Backstabbers" loop and Stone's husky vocals. At 17 cuts, there's a bit of drag, but not enough to deter you from Stone's wise and determined ease, and on the gritty "Twenty Dollars," Stone gives all those R&B princesses something to really chew on. --Amy Linden

Soul Music at its Best!5
This is an outstanding collection of soul music. We are so blessed to have a talented artist like Angie Stone who shares her musicality and creativity with us. This young woman obviously is inspired by real soul music from the 70's.

The sound on the Mahogany Soul album reaches back about 20-30 years ago and uses the flavour of neo-soul to sing about love, heartbreak and life in general. It has been too long since we've heard an uplifting song that celebrates the black man such as "Brotha" or pays homage to the "true pioneers of soul music" on "Soul Insurance".

My other favourites are "Bottles and Cans", "If It Wasn't" and "Life Goes On" (doesn't that last track sound like "Float On" by The Floaters?)..

I love her collaboration with Musiq Soulchild on "The Ingredients of Love" and her tribute to Curtis Mayfield on "The Makings of You".

Overall, Angie's music makes me feel good and reminds me of my father's basement house parties with blue lights or the 70's summer parties with fried chicken, rice & peas, yams and soul music as the backdrop. I can't get enough of her music. I recommend this album for ALL soul music lovers..enjoy, peace.

So appropriate5
Angie Stone's "Mahogany Soul" is so appropriately titled. From SOUL ASSURANCE to MAKE LOVE she will definitely have you bobbing your head and moving. As in the lyrics of SOUL ASSURANCE if you are not grooving by the end of this song then you won't. This is one of those CDs I love to put in and just drive. Angie's husky voice only gets better with time.

As for the lyrics, there is definitely something for everyone on this CD. From the positive salute to African-American men BROTHA, not only has a soulful tune it's lyrics exemplifies the true complexity and substance of African-American men. BOTTLES & CANS is one of my favorites; this one is not so much for the lyrics, in that I don't think I've ever experienced love to that level. However, to the musicianship/vocals I give much praise.

Much praise to the producers' choice in pairing up Angie with Musiq Soulchild and Calvin....Excellent voices which make for awesome songs.

Mahogany Soul honors the pioneers of soul while creating it's own sound. This is must have in your collection for soul fans.

where's the drummer1
Nothing wrong with Angie's voice. But there is somthing wrong with her choice of musicians. There aren't any. This review is more a commenetary on today's popular soul music than a crtique of the album. Where are the bass plyers, Stax guitar licks, and for Pete's sake, where are the drummers.
Electronic drums are so lame and there absence leaves a huge hole in the music. Any kind of music. Angie should hire Booker T and the MG's to back her and she might have something.
