Like any good troubadour with an acoustic guitar and a harmonica, Jeremy Fisher likes to wander. In fact, to support his music, Fisher has done no less than three national tours, venturing across Canada on his bicycle. If that seems like a gimmick, truth is, this Vancouver Island singer doesn't actually need one. Fisher is a genuine, uber-charming storyteller, his song "High School" a perfect example: "I'm in a band, we kinda suck but we don't know it yet/and I don't care anyway/'Cause soon I'm gonna sell these drums, pay my rent, support my kid/and tell him all about way back in daddy's day." The disc's highlight proves to be the title track. "Let It Shine" mixes up the feeling of Dylan's "Subterranian Homesick Blues" with its jubilant traditional gospel namesake; yet another prominent moment comes during the engaging "Living On The Moon", a duet featuring Be Good Tanyas co-frontperson Sam Parton that is climaxed by her Emmylou-inspired beauty and fragility. It's easy these days to forget the importance and value of storytelling in song, but once in awhile, a musician's lyrics can transcend trite-ness and take you on a journey; that is exactly the kind of songwriter Jeremy Fisher is. Signed to a five-record deal, there is a hope and a sense that he will continue to grow and find further honesty and depth, allowing him the time to develop from a really good songwriter into a truly great one. --Denise Sheppard
