Kermit takes center stage in this hilarious, parody-laden celebration of Muppetry, pulsating with original music, a star-studded cast of human cameos, and a heartwarming story reminiscent of "It's a Wonderful Life." Joan Cusack plays the deliciously villainous Miss Bitterman, a ruthless banker who succeeds in foreclosing on the Muppet Theatre only days before Kermit's Christmas extravaganza. As Kermit loses his livelihood, he plunges into the "I wish I'd never been born" mind-set instantly recognizable to George Bailey fans. It's going to take some Divine intervention (Whoopi Goldberg is cast as God, no less), plus a little help from a heavenly "Clarence." Despite some moments where the script seems adrift (how hard it must be to live up to the irresistible precedent set by the 1979 premier Muppet Movie) and some humor that borders on risqué, Fozzie and the gang are in fine form. The message is sweet: dreams are as vital to life as loyal friendships are to see them through. (Ages 5 and older) --Lynn Gibson

Synopsis
What would life amongst the Muppets have been without their unofficial leader Kermit the Frog? That's the question posed by this made-for-TV confection, which not only spoofs the Yuletide classic It's a Wonderful Life, but also takes satirical aim at such pop cultural phenomena as Moulin Rouge and Fear Factor. The plot is set in motion when typically evil banker Rachel Bitterman (Joan Cusack) forecloses on the Muppets' famous variety theater, with the intention of building a gaudy nightclub. But Bitterman's machinations take a back seat when apprentice guardian angel, Daniel (David Arquette), shows Kermit (voiced by Steve Whitmire) what conditions would have been had Kermit never existed. Without going into full detail, suffice to say that a Kermit-less world would have found Miss Piggy (voiced by Frank Oz) running a fraudulent psychic hot line, Fozzie Bear as a homeless derelict, and Sam the Eagle as a caged dancer at a rave. Decked out with cameo appearances by everyone from Whoopi Goldberg to the cast of the TV series Scrubs, It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie debuted over NBC on November 29, 2002. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The movie wasn't spectacular, but it was passable Christmas Muppet fair. However, the reviewer who was offended by the Propecia joke is even more stupid than the film was. Propecia is a hair loss medicine NOT a prostate medicine... I repeat... NOT a prostate medicine. God Lord, when you shut off that movie after 30 minutes did your children hit you over the head with your DVD Player? Yours is one of the most dim-witted reviews I've read in some time. It's not fine art but it's certainly NOT offensive! I'd let my kids watch it any time they pleased.

PARENTS BEWARE!!!1
Our parents bought this DVD for our kids this Christmas and after dinner we all cuddled up on the couch to watch what we thought would be another excellent Muppet movie. What a horrible DISSAPOINTMENT. Seeing God portrayed by a male-bashing, cynical and all around un-godly behaving Whoopi Goldberg was bad enough. But when jokes about topless dancing permits and Propecia (prostate medicine) presciptions started flying we knew that this was not the typical fun-loving family film we had come to expect from years of watching the Muppets. Less than 30 minutes into it we turned it off. It's a sad day for Muppet fans. DO NOT let your children see this shameful, disgrace of a movie.

I love the Muppets and used to watch The Muppet Show each time it was on, so I was thrilled to hear about another Muppet movie. I thought that the Muppet Christmas Carol was great, and I was looking for more like-minded entertainment. This was not it. The comic insult dog does not belong in a Muppet special. Nor does a scene that's a parody of Moulin Rouge (complete with Piggy saying "Will you sleep with me tonight?" to Kermit in French). I was greatly disappointed by this movie. Stick with the old classics -- this one is not one of them.
