Nobody would argue with the thought that Sissy Spacek is the perfect heroine of Stephen King's scary tale of teenage telekinesis. But in a pinch, Angela Bettis, the star of this 2002 TV remake, fills Spacek's bloody shoes very well. Bettis--who expertly plays a similar role in the indie horror pic May--gets all the loner pathos of poor Carrie White, equally tormented by her cool classmates and her religious-fanatic mom (Patricia Clarkson). Her transformation from doormat to vengeful prom queen remains surefire wish fulfillment for anyone who ever felt a misfit in high school. Despite Bettis's intensity, it's difficult to justify remaking Carrie when Brian De Palma's 1976 version is enshrined as a classic of its kind (especially given the pedestrian TV-movie production values on display here). This one delivers its jolts, but when you could just as easily spend time with Spacek and De Palma, why bother? --Robert Horton

Synopsis
This made-for-TV remake of the classic movie chiller Carrie is slightly more faithful to the original Stephen King novel--and slightly less profane and violent. Following in the bloody footsteps of Sissy Spacek, Angela Bettis stars as woebegone high school girl Carrie White, whose shy and awkward demeanor obscures the fact that she is "gifted" with awesome telekinetic powers. As part of a cruel and vicious student prank, Carrie's better-looking and more socially savvy classmates arrange for the hapless heroine to be elected prom queen--and one does not have to have seen the original film to know the terror that is unleashed once Carrie is crowned (in more ways than one). The climax is infinitely more "high tech" than in the 1976 film, but whether it is equally as frightening is a matter of taste; additionally, the 2002 version boasts a radically different ending, one that could very well accommodate a sequel or two...or three... Patricia Clarkson reprises the old Piper Laurie role as Carrie's abusive religious-fanatic mother. Carrie first aired November 4, 2002, on NBC. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Despite it's downsides, this remake of Carrie still pulls it off4
With Stephen King's first novel, Brian dePaulma's classic, and the outrageous sequel, I really did not see this coming. But now I am glad it did.

If you don't really know much about Carrie, it is basically a story about a girl in high school who happens to get bittersweet revenge on her classmates, who are way too cruel.

It starts off showing Carrie in her gym class, being humiliated because she cannot hit a ball with a baseball bat. Later, she has her first period in the shower and everyone starts to laugh at her. Fortunately, only one student had the heart to make up for her classmate's cruelty, and sends her boyfriend off to take Carrie out to the prom. Meanwhile, Mrs. Desjardin, the gym teacher, goes very tough on all the students who had laughed about Carrie's incident and threatens to remove their prom tickets unless they attend her daily detention classes. One student, Chris, backs out and decides that she did nothing wrong, so her prom tickets are taken away. So.. she decides to get revenge on Carrie.
Meanwhile, Carrie is "stuck in hell" with her mother who takes christianity a little over the top. Spending her hours in a "prayer closet" to beg for forgiveness, she is reading teen magazines. Once she gets asked to go to the prom, Carrie fears that she will be stood up, but decides to go.
But before this happens, we learn that she has the amazing, yet terrifying power of telekinesis. She practices hew powers on a hairbrush and researches it on the internet. Her mother, however, believes Carrie is a witch and forbids her to go to the prom, because it would be a sin. So what does Carrie do? She scares the jesus out of her by throwing things around in her rage. Finally, she goes, and has the time of her life with people who seem to accept her...

This made-for-TV remake has many ups and a few downs. First off, please don't expect another classic, although I doubt you were. Sissy Spacek's mousy go at Carrie is not seen here. Angela Bettis seems terrified of everything because of the fear that she may be hurt. Everyone has been in Carrie's shoes, and can relate to her in even the smallest measures. There is more of a story here and a glimpse of one incident that happened in Carrie's past is shown. The fantasy, dream-like texture shown out in the picture, the camera angles and the special effects does get a little annoying, but it is so easy to look past it. The length of this movie is very much appreciated, because for people who have not read the book, things not explained or revealed in the original keep viewers interested here.

There are some downsides to this movie too. For example, Margaret White is just not the same in this movie. Piper Laurie was hysterically over the top! In this version, she looks possessed and surreal. Another complaint was the prom scene. While I was completely shocked, a few things dePaulma had introduced are not seen here. Things such as the slow-motion, tidal wave effect when the blood is spilled, and the dual camera effect are not seen here. Maybe that's for good or for bad, I don't know. I just missed it. Another complaint was the ending. This ending dissapoints, leaving room for a television series. Then again, I didn't really like dePualma's version of Carrie either.

Overall, I think this movie deserves your worthwhile. While Sissy Spacek is "the" Carrie, Angela Bettis still does a great job and makes you feel.. well, you have to see the movie for yourself!
