JAMES GIVES US A CHANCE!
THIS 4-CD BOXSET IS A MUST-HAVE.NYC'S PREMIER FUNK-JAZZ PUNK MUSICIAN.JAMES IS A GREAT SINGER,SAXMAN AND TAKES INFLUENCES LIKE JAMES BROWN,PARLIAMENT FUNKADELIC,EARLY JAZZ AND INUMERABLE BLACK INFLUENCES AND TAKES E'M TO THE BRINK WITH CUTTING EDGE RAWNESS AND INNOVATION WHEN IT BLENDS WITH HIS WHITE BOY REBEL SOUL.I GUESS BEING TAGGED SOMEWHAT PUNK IN THE POST '70'S- EARLY '80'S DIDN'T HELP YOU GET RADIOPLAY AS THE USA IN PARTICULAR SEEMED STILL OUT ON POT AND SUBURB MATERIALISTIC VALUES QUITE CONTENT TO LISTEN TO THE SAME OLD ROCK MUSIC WITH TOO MUCH EMPHASIS ON GUITARS AND LITTLE INTEREST IN ORIGINAL OR DIFFERENT SOUNDING BANDS.
JAMES' VARIOUS INCARNATIONS OF BANDS FEATURES MUCH TALENT WITH GREAT CHOPS AND PLAYERS.NEVER WEAK PLAYERS IN HIS BANDS.SOMEONE IN ANOTHER REVIEW SEEMED TO MISINFORM US SAYING HE O.D.'D ON HEROIN BUT THIS BOXSET 2002 SAYS HE STILL IS AROUND WORKING A BIT IN NY BUT NOT SO VISIBLE AS PRY SOME NAMES WITH CLUB RESIDENCES THERE ALWAYS PLAYING.
I HAD THE 'CHANCE' TO SEE JAMES AROUND 1980 IN DETROIT AT A CLUB BUT IT WAS CANCELLED SADLY.GET THIS SET IF YOU HAVE ANY INTEREST IN MUSIC HISTORY.ITS FAR MORE WORTHWHILE THAN VIRTUALLY ANYTHING IN TODAYS SOULLESS,GREEDY MUSIC 'INDUSTRY'.ALL THESE DECADES OF SOME GREAT MUSIC ITS AMAZING ALL THE CRAP PEOPLE ARE STILL LOST IN."DON'T YOU EVER LEARN" AS RUNDGREN ONCE SAID..CHANCE NEVER SOLD OUT UNLIKE MOST MUSIC 'IDOLS' TODAY!
you thought the rapture was good?
how is it that someone so influential has remained in relative obscurity for so long? james chance's music is timeless. i can't believe how innovative it still sounds today. all these neo post punk bands like the rapture and the liars have obviously listened to a few chance records in their time.
this box set collects almost all of chance's output from the 70s and 80s. An amazing mix of punk, disco, funk and free jazz make this box set a truly epic listening experience. the set also contains liner notes by glenn o'brien -- former music editor for interview magazine and director of the cult classic 'DOwntown 81' which is essentially a fictitious account of the early downtown NYC punk scenesters (including James Chance). Althouh many associate Chance with fellow punk rockers like NY Dolls, Television, Suicide, etc., James' music, more than all of his contemporaries, defies categorization. He had soul before Jon Spencer knew what it even meant.
If you want to relive the experience of hearing bands like Gang of Four and Wire for the first time then take a chance (no pun intended) on James' music. You won't regret it.
Kudos for indie label Tiger Style for managing to put this together.
