Folk, country & western, western swing, rock'n'roll... En revisitant et en combinant ces différents courants au sceau du psychédélisme, Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen ont créé l'une des musiques les plus originales et les plus attachantes de la scène américaine des années 70. Comme en témoigne plus particulièrement sa reprise de "Smoke! Smoke! Smoke! (That Cigarette)" de Tex Williams, le groupe de San Francisco privilégie ici sa facette rockabilly – ou plutôt rock des bars –, anticipant de quelques années le revival orchestré par les Stray Cats. Ce n'est peut-être pas l'œuvre absolue du genre, diront les mauvaises langues, mais, avec Hot To Trot , on éprouve tout de même cette impression agréable de voyager à bord d'un hot rod à travers les grands espaces américains.
