The "Theme from Shaft" is now so ingrained in popular consciousness as the blaxploitation-movie track that it's hard to listen to it without a faint smirk. ("Who's the black private dick that's a sex machine to all the chicks?") But if you can get past the inadvertent humour, it's still a devilishly exciting piece of music--all hi-hat 16ths, wah-wah guitar, strings and woodwind, like a Norman Whitfield Motown production taken to a baroque extreme. The rest of the album consists mainly of incidental mood music of no great worth: "Walk from Regio's"' "Ellie's Love Theme"--you know the sort of thing. Only two other tracks feature the Black Moses pipes, while the endless "Do Your Thing" takes its place in the catalogue of Hayes epics that began with Hot Buttered Soul. --Barney Hoskyns

Le générique du film de Gordon Parks, Shaft, enregistré par Isaac Hayes en 1971, restera à jamais comme la composition ultime de son auteur. Après une longue intro instrumentale, bâtie autour d'un riff de guitare joué à la pédale wah wah, le Moïse noir – comme il aimait modestement se baptiser – déploie sa voix mâle avec son habituelle nonchalance sensuelle. Le reste de cette B.O. gorgée de soul utilise avec finesse tous les artifices du genre. À l'origine, Hayes était (en binôme avec son acolyte Dave Porter) un songwriter de l'écurie Atlantic : "Soul Man" et "Hold On, I'm Commin'" de Sam & Dave, c'était lui ! Ces talents de compositeur-arrangeur se préciseront par la suite, puisant largement dans le jazz. Mais la soul qu'Isaac Hayes construit tout au long de Shaft est surtout faite de soie et de champagne. Chaque cuivre, chaque ligne de basse apportent une finesse toute particulière qu'on ne trouvera pas chez ses collègues de bureau. Un must. --Marc Zisman
