Ella Fitzgerald en 1958. Elle chante, la beauté de sa voix fait le reste. Après Cole Porter, Rodgers & Hart, Ellington et Gershwin, c'est au répertoire d'Irving Berlin qu'elle s'attaque. Auteur de quelques 800 chansons, ses premières écrites en 1907, ce dernier est l'un des compositeurs qui a fait l'Amérique. Un double album s'impose. Ella l'enregistre à Los Angeles. Norman Granz en confie les arrangements à Paul Weston dont le grand orchestre accompagne la chanteuse. Très demandé à Hollywood pour le raffinement de ses partitions -il fut jadis l'arrangeur exclusif de Tommy Dorsey- Weston signe probablement ici quelques unes de ses plus belles pages. Les cordes accentuent le romantisme de la musique et les cuivres sonnent avec panache et éclat. Quant aux thèmes rassemblés ici, on ne peut rêver mieux. Confiés à Ella, "Let's Face The Music And Dance", "Puttin' On The Ritz" ou "How Deep Is The Ocean?" trouvent leur interprète idéale. --Pierre de Chocqueuse
