Editorial Reviews
From Amazon.co.uk
The music of Mali and Guinea is breathtakingly rich and subtle. Linked by the historic Mande Empire and its griot tradition, their music is centred around the kora (African harp), and this compilation features two of West Africa's key kora players, with the intricate, shimmering sounds of Jali Moussa Jawara and Toumani Diabate. Also included is the Malian desert blues of Ali Farka Toure, the joyful fusion of Bambeya Jazz National and the warm, earthy Mande jazz of Momo Wandel. The most startling track in this excellent selection is by "Nahawa Doumbia", a Malian griot singer who pioneered the rhythmic wassoulou sound. Her voice, crystalline and passionate, soars above the mix.--Lucy O'Brien
