Editorial Reviews

From Amazon.co.uk
Perhaps it's an indication of the wealth of music produced in the British Isles but it's hard to believe that one year (1977) could produce an album such as the Sex Pistols' Nevermind The Bollocks on one hand and Mike Waterson on the other. Issued here on CD for the first time, this is hardcore English folk. There are no jolly fiddle tunes for the listener to latch onto, not a great deal of sing- a-long material. Aside from a few backing vocals and the odd snatch of melodeon from Rod Stradling this is just Waterson's voice and voice alone. Whereas in collaboration with John Harrison and Lal & Norma in the family band the effect could be astounding (demonstrated by two tracks taken from the 1966 Watersons'album A Yorkshire Garland), the solo Mike is a degree more stark, less comfortable on the ear. The material--all English, mainly Yorkshire--is similarly low key, eschewing the big issues in favour of tales of charlady's sons and lads from Wenslydale. Not an easy ride but in it's own way a good deal more radical than anything Johnny Rotten & co ever produced. --Phil Udell
