A classic
That's a '70's rock jewel. Ian Hunter is one of the best songwriters of all time, and he sings fine, a cross between Bob Dylan and David Bowie. The Bowie-penned title track is an instant classic. It also has some cool rockers like "One Of The Boys" and "Jerkin' Crokus", with great guitar work from the much-underrated Mick Ralphs. The opener, Dylan's "Sweet Jane" is just gracious, but the best song on this album is "Sucker", which shows Hunter's immense talent as a songwriter. You really can't go wrong with this one

Hasta que se encontraron con esa inesperada ayuda
Mott The Hoople ya tenía una interesante trayectoria antes de All The Young Dudes, pero el éxito les había sido esquivo. Hasta que David Bowie les entregó la canción título y se ofreció además como productor, reinventando el sonido del grupo (crujientes guitarras, saxos), transformándolo en una sensación dentro del panorama glam. Y es que en 1972 Bowie se encontrapa en la cima de su creatividad, con el magistral Ziggy Stardust en pleno furor y produciendo junto a Mick Ronson el también fundamental Transformer de Lou Reed.

Sin embargo, All The Young Dudes no es más que un correcto álbum, con contados chispazos e importante dentro del género, pero jamás para discutir con Bowie, Reed o Bolan. No es casualidad que aparte de Dudes, una muy buena aunque no excepcional canción, otro de los momentos memorables sea el cover de Velvet Underground Sweet Jane. El grupo logra despegar con los duros originales Sucker y Ready For Love, y la casi balada Sea Diver, siempre al frente con la Dylanesca voz de Ian Hunter y la punzante guitarra de Mick Ralphs.

El despegue definitivo de Mott The Hoople se produjo en el momento adecuado, pero no necesariamente haciendo su mejor música, ni tampoco siendo totalmente ellos mismos. Una demostración más de que el éxito no va siempre de la mano con la calidad.
