Barton (film, University Coll., Dublin) gives us a fascinating study of Oscar Award-winning producer-director Jim Sheridan. Perhaps best known for the critically acclaimed and commercially successful film My Left Foot, Sheridan has built a solid career on films that explore political issues as well as personal and social themes. Barton devotes a chapter each to that film and In the Name of the Father, The Field, The Boxer, and Into the West. Particularly intriguing is the historical and social background of The Boxer, which shows that the Catholic Church, Protestant factories, and youth clubs greatly influenced the rise and importance of boxing clubs. Also discussed are Sheridan's other works, including the not-yet-released East of Harlem. Of special value is the 16-page transcription of Barton's interview with his subject, which gives us Sheridan in his own words.
