Product Description

There is a recent phenomenon of growing wine grapes in cold climates where it was previously believed impossible. The authors researched and visited grape growing in Estonia, Latvia, Denmark and Belarus and brought back the technology and grape varieties to Minnesota where they have successfully developed vineyards and made the wine. Wine grapes are now grown in every state in the US, including Alaska and North Dakota. This is a 'hands-on' book with photographs, figures and tables. The 34 grape varieties of special interest for cold climates and detailed instructions on winter vine survival are provided. Selecting a vineyard site, training and pruning, grape ripening and keys to successful winemaking are detailed.

Great book for the north4
This book is a great buy for anybody who is interested in growing grapes in northern climates. I'm interested in starting a small backyard vineyard, and I found this book inspirational. It describes the challenges well, gives great advice and also gives descriptions of many hardy varieties. Good coverage about making wines from Northern grapes. It covers material specific to the north that is not generally covered in other books. It's intention is not to discuss the basics of starting your grapes, I would suggest getting a different book for this purpose. That said, this book is a must buy if your interested understanding the challenges of growing healthy grapes in the North.
