Product Description

Emily Windsnap is thrilled to arrive at her new home, a secret island near the Bermuda Triangle where humans and merfolk live together, and where being a girl who grows a tail as soon as she enters the water isn't a problem. Being Emily, she can't resist exploring forbidden places - as a result, she inadvertently wakes the kraken, the legendary deep sea monster that has been asleep for two hundred years. What follows makes a terrifically exciting adventure - not just for Emily, but for her old adversary Mandy Rushton, whose parents have taken her on a cruise, and whose father thinks he can make his fortune if he catches a mermaid. Their voices alternate as the kraken's terrifying tentacles rise from the deep. Mermaid magic, a fabulous monster, and wonderful descriptions of undersea life make this a rich fantasy that is a real page-turner and has all the charm and warmth of Liz Kessler's first book, THE TAIL OF EMILY WINDSNAP.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-6–Emily is ecstatic. In The Tail of Emily Windsnap (Candlewick, 2004), she learns that she is a mermaid and reunites her human mother with her merman father. Now, the happy family is going to live together on an island smack dab in the center of the Bermuda Triangle. King Neptune himself has designated Allpoints Island as a safe place where humans and merfolk can coexist in peace. Even better, Emily's mermaid buddy Shona is moving to the island as well. Unfortunately, Emily is still feeling a little different as she is the only half-human/half-mermaid hybrid she knows. In an attempt to impress the others, she unwittingly unleashes a monster sleeping at the heart of the island. To put it to rest, she must now face not only her fears but also her old rival from middle school, Mandy Rushton. Constantly shying away from taking responsibility for her actions, Emily opts for the path of least resistance time and again, only stopping the murderous kraken when forced to do so. The book comes across as overly simplistic much of the time and relies too heavily on coincidence and some unbelievably cheery endings. Just the same, mermaid lovers everywhere will undoubtedly enjoy this story. Consider purchase if the first book is popular.–Elizabeth Bird, New York Public Library

From Booklist
Gr. 4-7. The daughter of a woman and a merman, Emily is a girl on land and a mermaid in the water. Now the family lives on Allpoints Island, safe from the curious inquiries of humans and accepted by the merpeople community. In this sequel to The Tail of Emily Windsnap (2004), our heroine's insatiable curiosity lands her in hot water. While investigating a mysterious lagoon smack in the middle of the ocean, Emily inadvertently rouses the dreaded monster Kracken. A vengeful Neptune, king of the ocean realm, visits the merpeople to express outrage at this turn of events: the Kracken was not supposed to awaken for another eight years, and now destruction threatens the island colony. Emily needs to fess up to her deed and take on the responsibility of calming the creature, a task rife with complications. High-action adventure, a plucky protagonist, and whimsical illustrations enliven this sea fantasy, which will be most thoroughly appreciated by series followers. Anne O'Malley

Time to get Kraken4
The second book in Liz Kessler's Emily Windsnap series starts with the Windsnap family happily relocated to Allpoints Island, with its soft white sand beaches, crystal clear water, palm trees - in short an island paradise.

If you're thinking that this all sounds pretty great, you should know that Allpoints Island is located right in the middle of the Bermuda Triangle, and that there are some parts off limits to little half-mermaids for good reason.

As Alfred, Lord Tennyson once said:

"Below the thunders of the upper deep;
Far far beneath in the abysmal sea,
His ancient, dreamless, uninvaded sleep
The Kraken sleepeth ..."

(Shamelessly quoted by me, not from the original source, "The Kraken" as you would believe, but from the flyleaf of this very book)

Being a girl of insatiable curiosity, Emily decides to explore her new territory, and before you can say "Ooops! She did it again", her exploits get her into enough hot water to really make a Kraken get steamed. Soon she's facing a three part nightmare, involving the aforementioned cranky beastie, a stubborn and bossy trident-wielding Neptune, and a blast from the past whom she thought she was rid of at last.

Better than the first, this one is to be read in one sitting, because you won't want to put it down.
