Ask any Catalan bride where she would like to be married and she will probably choose the monastery at Montserrat. The jagged mountain that stands guard over Barcelona has long been the spiritual centre of the Catalan nationalism, and the virgin of Montserrat its most potent symbol. Pilgrims queue up to kiss the wooden statue; it is said that any woman who touches her will be blessed with a child. Many Catalan women, such as the operatic soprano Montserrat Caballé, take their name from the sacred mountain.
