Women have colon cancer just as men do, Adrouny points out, and share such risks as overeating and weight gain in adulthood. The disease is insidious, for its early stages usually are without symptoms. Periodic examinations are vital, and colonoscopy is the best of these, since the physician has a view of the area and may, at the same time, remove any polyps, which, if allowed to grow, often become malignant. With the aid of good, clear illustrations, Adrouny describes the anatomy and physiology of the colon. A detailed chapter makes clear the stages of the disease and how they affect the prognosis. Adrouny describes various surgical procedures, their results, and possible complications, and he allows that chemotherapy and radiation are sometimes necessary in addition to surgery.
