Product Description

Create realistic 3-D flowers using award-winning quilter Joan Shay's new innovative technique, Appli-bond. Now construct flowers, with their many intricate petals, that you thought too difficult to make before. Appli-bond is the fusing of two layers of fabric, eliminating the need to finish the edges. A very realistic and sophisticated flower is the result. Included among these are the hydrangea, geranium, African violet, and lilac. Also, learn how to construct whole flower units using Joan's Fleece Foundation Piecing method. With Fleece Foundation Piecing, the flower unit is constructed before it is appliqued to the background fabric. Place flowers as illustrated or design your own arrangement with ease. Instructions are included, using this technique, for constructing the poppy, iris, amaryllis, and more. AUTHORBIO: Joan, who was taught to sew on a Singer treadle machine by her grandmother, has been a quilter for many years. She has her own pattern company, Petal Play, which she operates from her home in Massachusetts. In addition, she has taught and lectured extensively throughout the country. She has appeared on television on the PBS show "Quilting from the Heartland" with Sharlene Jorgenson, and on the HGTV program "Simply Quilts" with Alex Anderson. REVIEW: I am not sure why 3-D applique created with fusibles is traditional. Perhaps the reference is to the background blocks in the 11 quilts. These serve to set off the 11 flowers which could easily be combined in different ways or on other backgrounds. The flowers are lovely and utilize detailed petals, beaded stamens and other realistic touches. They include dandelion, magnolia, water lily, coneflower and Christmas cactus. The instructions appear complete and well illustrated.

About the Author
Although Joan doesn't love gardening, she does love flowers. It was through her love of flowers and a desire to make them as realistic as possible out of fabric that her Appli-bond technique was conceived. It's difficult to believe that she comes to quilting having no artistic training, because her Petal Play designs are so life-like. Joan, who was taught to sew on a Singer treadle machine by her grandmother, has been a quilter for many years. A registered nurse, Joan and her husband, Tony, live on Cape Cod. They have two children, Matthew and Kristin, and a grandaughter, Shay Elizabeth.
