Squares galore and more!
This is one of the best books on afghan knitting I have ever seen (and I have seen a few!). Why am I so convinced? Let me tell you the ways:
It has 200 blocks. Of course there is a bunch of blocks I don't like, but amongst 200, there's bound to be the perfect set of blocks for just about any occasion. All of the blocks are designed to knit to 6" squared, as long as you knit with a DK yarn. You can use a bigger weight, but you should use the same weight throughout to make the blocks match in size. The editing for this book is gorgeous and included a full colour block directory at the beginning of the book to see all of the blocks over a 4-5 pages section.
The author has a section on how to plan the overall design and match colours and textures that is informative, well illustrated and to the point. There is also a section on knitting techniques that starts from casting on to increases and decorative techniques. Then the author includes a few edgings that can be used to complement the afghans.
Each block has its page, though to be sure some of the blocks that are counted in the 200 number are palette swaps. Still every block type comes with colour illustration of the author's suggested matching blocks, that will make the matching even easier to do. Overall the blocks are varied and most of them are interesting as well.
Another interesting section is the one where the author displays some examples of matches that can be made with the blocks. Almost all of the projects look like complicated quilts but are actually composed of variety of blocks that are simply arranged in different ways. Very inspiring and unexpected. It gave me very good ideas for stunning assortments.
So if you want to be knitting cushions, afghans, baby blankets or anything that can be assembled out of 6 inch squares, you should definitely get this book.
