Kindergarten-Grade 2-Bourgeois combines fact and fiction to create two appealing vignettes about the work of familiar community members. Police Officers follows the story of a little girl who reports a suspected bike theft in progress. An ensuing explanation of the judicial process includes an arrest; a court trial; and the function of a lawyer, a judge, and a district attorney. The book also profiles the careers of police officers and covers their typical duties and equipment. It concludes with safety tips. Similarly, Postal Workers follows a birthday card from a little boy to his Grandma as it travels across the country. The author explains how to address, stamp, and mail a letter; the purpose of zip codes, postal-carrier equipment, and mail-sorting machines; and profiles a day in the life of a postal worker. A positive image of both fields emerges within the framework of believable stories. The illustrations make use of soft colors, round lines, and humor to create warm characters in an attractive layout. Multicultural characters are represented, and both books are gender sensitive.

Gr. 1-3. This colorful book begins with a fictional story about a girl who reports suspicious behavior. Calls to the police lead to the arrests of two bicycle thieves (later brought to trial) and the discovery of two raccoons stealing from garbage cans (let go with a warning). The two final sections discuss what police officers do and how children can stay safe. The original edition of Police Officers (1998) was published for older readers as part of the In My Neighborhood series. Now the book has been changed to make it more accessible to younger children and added to the Kids Can Read series. The format is smaller and vertical. The typeface is larger, and text has been edited, with some sentences left intact, a few deleted, and a great many rewritten with simpler words and sentence structures. The updated book uses the same artwork, but it has been enlarged, cropped, and repositioned on the pages. A good addition to primary-grade units on community helpers. Carolyn Phelan
