Product Description

1876. Frederick Schlegel, poet, writer on aesthetics and literary historian, along with his brother August Wilhelm, were considered the Messias of the Romantic School. Of the two brothers Schlegel, Frederick, the younger is the more important. Together they founded the journal Athenaum to establish and spread the principles of the new school of Romanticism. Schlegel explains Lectures on the History: In the following lectures I purpose to take a comprehensive survey of the development and spirit of literature among the principal nations of ancient as well as of modern times: and more especially to consider literature in reference to its influence on practical life, on the destiny of nations, and on the progress of ages. Partial Contents: Introduction and plan of the Work; Later Greek Literature; Review; Brief duration of Roman Literature; Indian Monuments and Epics; Retrospect to Europe; Teutonic Poetry; Third set of chivalrous Poems; Italian Literature; Literature of the Northern and Eastern Nations of Europe; General Remarks on Philosophy previous and subsequent to the Reformation; Romance; Philosophy of the Seventeenth Century; Lighter Productions of the French, and imitation of the English; Retrospect; and General Survey.
