About the Author
Ellen Kottler is currently a lecturer in the Department of Secondary Education at California State University, Fullerton. She has been a teacher in inner city schools as well as urban and rural settings. She also served as a curriculum specialist in social studies. Her areas of interest include beginning teacher support, social studies education, and supporting English language learners in the classroom. She is the author or coauthor of several articles and books for educators, including Secrets to Success for Social Studies Teachers, Counseling Skills for Teachers, Secrets to Success for Beginning Elementary Teachers, On Being a Teacher, and Secrets for Secondary School Teachers: How to Succeed in Your First Year. She received her EdS from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in instructional and curricular studies, her MA from Eastern Michigan University, and her BA from the University of Michigan. Nancy P. Gallavan is professor of teacher education in the MAT program at the University of Central Arkansas. She worked as an elementary and middle school teacher in the St. Vrain Valley and Cherry Creek School Districts of Colorado for twenty years while earning her master's degree from the University of Colorado and her PhD from the University of Denver. Prior to her current position, she was an associate professor of teacher education specializing in social studies and multicultural education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Gallavan has authored more than sixty publications, including Secrets to Success for Elementary School Teachers (2007) and Secrets to Success for Social Studies Teachers (2008) with Ellen Kottler and What Principals Need to Know About Teaching Social Studies (2003).
