Editorial Reviews
From Library Journal
Lyme disease, a tick-borne multisystem illness, has only been recognized as a distinct disease since 1975. Because it is relatively new and has widely varying symptoms, it is difficult to diagnose and is often disregarded by physicians when evaluating patients. Edited by two medical professors and with chapters written by respected physicians, this book is an excellent source of clinical information about this newly discovered and poorly understood disease. Chapters cover epidemiology, prevention, natural history, and clinical management as well as the neurologic, cardiac, and musculoskeletal features of the disease, pediatric Lyme disease, the long-term consequences of infection, the use of laboratory tests in diagnosis, and the status of Lyme disease vaccine development. While the text is rather technical and is intended for use by medical professionals, it is well written enough that an educated lay reader willing to use a medical dictionary should be able to get considerable use out of it. Additionally, the dearth of reliable medical information about Lyme disease makes this book indispensable for both clinical and larger public library medical collections. [Smaller libraries might consider Allen Barbour's Lyme Disease, LJ 4/15/96.?Ed.]?Stacey Hathaway-Bell, State Lib. of Louisiana, Baton Roug.
