About the Author
Born in New York City, raised in the Midwest and now a resident of the San Francisco Bay area, Jon Rose has been a philatelic writer, columnist, editor and author since the mid-1970s. Starting as a stamp columnist for the San Jose Mercury News in 1973, Rose soon won the Bertha Weisz Memorial award for the best U.S. newspaper stamp column. In 1977 he began writing Panorama USA, a bimonthly stamp column for Stamp Collector that ran for almost 20 years. In 1984 he became editor of the 1869 Times, the quarterly journal of the 1869 Pictorial Research Associates. He had previously been editor or co-editor of the group's book publications. In 1986 he served as co-editor (with Richard M. Searing) of the award-winning 1869 cover census book, The 1869 Issue on Cover: A Census and Analysis. In 1991 Rose authored the first book in Linn's handbook series, Classic United States Imperforate Stamps. He is currently assistant 1869 Period editor of The Chronicle of the U.S. Classic Postal Issues. A collector since grade school in Cleveland, Ohio, Rose began seriously collecting U.S. classic stamps and covers in 1962. He first exhibited an 1869 specialized collection in 1983, eventually winning dozens of gold medals at national shows, two grand awards and three international golds. The high point was the international large gold won at Singapore 95. He has recently expanded his interests to include early classic issues of the entire world. Rose has three sons, all in college or graduate school, only one of whom collects stamps. When not working on stamps or stamp publications, Rose treads the precarious byways of the stock and bond investment markets. His distant second hobby is military history. "I got my start in stamp collecting through the encouragement and counsel of senior members of the Garfield Perry Stamp Club in Cleveland. Later, after college, my philatelic interests were rekindled by the efforts of my still dear ex-wife, Susan," Rose said.
