This new edition, supported by a grant from Furthermore, the publication fund of the J.M. Kaplan Foundation, contains text and pictures from then 1965 edition with new foreward by Dr. Richard Lightly, Director of the Mt. Cuba Center for the Study of Piedmont Flora, and an updated appendix with lists of recommended books and dealers of plants and equipment. The book offers advice on tree and shrub selection and practical aspects of planting, equipment, labeling and landscaping. Hazards- notably drought, cold, rodents, and insect pests- are treated with the authority of first-hand knowledge.

About the Author
Fred Lape(1900-1985) was raised in Esperance, New York, near the 97-acre farm which became the Landis Arboretum. Educated at Cornell, he taught at Stanford and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He was a poet, teacher, farmer, and writer and published extensively in newspapers and magazines; he wrote two volumes of poetry and several books, including Apples and Man (1979) and Farm and Village Boyhood (1980).
