Excerpt
There is no reason to begin by describing the beauty of flowers – in buying this book you have already demonstrated that you are well aware of their importance in the garden. But for all of us there remains much to learn, and despite the welter these days of T.V. shows, CD-ROMs, the Internet and so on we still turn to books for most of our information.

There are times when we want a leisurely read – a chance to look at pictures of other people’s gardens, a detailed description of our favourite plants, a design idea or two, a book for the coffee table. There are many excellent books of this type, but this is not one of them.

The role of this book is quite different and relatively unique – its purpose is to provide on-the-spot instant information on the identification, selection and cultivation of the flowers you are likely to find at the garden centre or in the popular plant catalogues. It is designed to be slipped into the pocket or handbag so that it can be taken around the garden or into the shop.

For many years millions of gardeners have turned to the Flower Expert for information on annuals, perennials, bulbs etc. In this pocket version the basic style has been retained but the information has been boiled down to the essential bare facts. All the popular genera have been retained, of course, and so have many unusual ones, but the rarities listed in only a few catalogues have been omitted.

Here then are the things you need to know as you look around the garden you are visiting or the garden centre where you are shopping. What is it called? When does it flower? How tall will it grow? Will it grow in my garden? Checking on this final point is most important – it is folly to buy a pot-grown perennial or a packet of seeds just because the plant in the pot or the picture on the package appeals to you. It is essential to find out whether it will grow in the soil and situation you can provide.

So welcome to the world of garden flowers laid out on the following pages. You will find tiny alpines and man-sized giants, but all share three features. They can all be grown outdoors during their growing season, they do not have a permanent woody framework, and they produce sufficient bloom to provide a significant floral display.
