There is no reason to begin by describing the beauty of flowers – in buying this book you have already demonstrated that you are well aware of their importance in the garden. But for all of us there remains much to learn, and despite the welter these days of T.V. shows, CD-ROMs, the Internet and so on we still turn to books for most of our information.
There are times when we want a leisurely read – a chance to look at pictures of other people’s gardens, a detailed description of our favourite plants, a design idea or two, a book for the coffee table. There are many excellent books of this type, but this is not one of them.
The role of this book is quite different and relatively unique – its purpose is to provide on-the-spot instant information on the identification, selection and cultivation of the flowers you are likely to find at the garden centre or in the popular plant catalogues. It is designed to be slipped into the pocket or handbag so that it can be taken around the garden or into the shop.
