Alex the pig is just like many other little boys. He is mischievous, messy, and always on the hunt for some snack he can gobble up while his mother isn’t looking. When his mother catches him in the garden stuffing himself with new potatoes, she orders him immediately to stop eating and tidy up. Grumbling, he stomps over to the lake, and gets distracted by wild apples and raspberries. Suddenly he’s captured by an enormous monster. The monster is just like many other little boys, always trying to find something to snack on behind his mother’s back. Alex avoids becoming his next snack by using his wits; he tells him stories of other creatures that are bigger and tastier to munch on. Luck is on Alex’s side. The monster’s mother arrives to take home her son just before Alex runs out of ways to distract him. It’s an amusing tale, but what really makes the book a treat are Carl Cneut’s illustrations. Cneut and Carl Norac are an award-winning storytelling team from Belgium, and Cn! eut in particular is something of an international phenomenon as an artist and illustrator. The illustrations in Monster, Don’t Eat Me! Are exceptionally accomplished and original. Cneut creates a slightly chaotic feel by distorting the appearance of depth in his illustrations. The look is surreal, as much as one can say this about pictures that are intended for children. The many different kinds of animals, birds, and insects in their human clothing are rendered in great detail, and there are imaginative, witty asides in the form of various creatures going about their business while the main narrative is unfolding. There’s lots to look at and admire for both adults and children.

"The tension between two snack lovers is brilliantly displayed through Cneut’s vivid paintings. Pointing out creatively crafted animals hiding from the monster in the forest can be an additional enjoyable activity for young readers."
