Product Description
Journey south of the equator to the cold-water currents of South America, Africa, Australia, and Antarctica, where seventeen different types of penguins reside.
An early explorer wrote, “We came across a multitude of strange birds. They could not fly, but ran quickly enough to get away from us…. Nature appears to have endowed them with great agility: they are wonderful swimmers.”
In The World of Penguins, critically acclaimed biologist and wildlife educator Evelyne Daigle, brings readers an in-depth view into the fascinating environment of these exquisite birds. The riveting text coupled with detailed illustrations by well-known, wildlife illustrator Daniel Grenier, will capture readers everywhere as they take “flight” into the land and underwater world of penguins.

Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
Grade 4-6–What with penguins marching on happy feet in movie theaters and on video screens, it's no wonder that a new title on the subject should hover on the Antarctic horizon. Nicely illustrated with realistic acrylic paintings and some photos, slender and oversized, this book is eye-catching and attractive. Daigle's text reads, in places, like a Cousteau-inspired script. Broken into broad subject areas (think Predators), it is then encapsulated into smaller topics (Look Out for the Leopard Seal!) surrounded by a sea of white space and accompanying illustrations and captions. Along with the expected biological information on diet, physique, nesting, and habitat are a quick overview of Antarctic exploration and comments regarding the unique global detente among nations as to environmental respect for this frozen continent. A helpful global distribution map is included, as is a list of Web sites (in English and French). Less detailed than Bernard Stonehouse's equally attractive A Visual Introduction to Penguins (Checkmark, 2000) or Wayne Lynch's informative Penguins! (Firefly, 2000), Daigle's offering contains more meat than Bobbie Kalman's Penguins (Crabtree, 1995) or Gail Gibbons's Penguins! (Holiday House, 1998).–Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NY

Review
“Just when I think I’ve seen and read it all regarding penguins, along comes a book to dispel that notion. The World of Penguins offers an abundance of surprising and delightful gems. Written in clear, detailed, descriptive paragraphs, the book is organized by topics…Acrylic illustrations complement the text…an excellent research resource.”

About the Author
After observing penguins in captivity for almost twelve years, Evelyne Daigle was given an opportunity to study them more closely through a joint project of Students on Ice and the Montréal Biodôme. Aboard an icebreaker in the company of both scientists and students, the author gathered written and visual information on penguins and the fascinating world in which they live. Inspiration was plentiful. By adding to the existing knowledge base, this expedition to the end of the world will benefit the Biodôme team and visitors alike. Evelyne Daigle lives in Quebec, where she has been a biologist and scientific interpreter at the Montréal Biodôme since 1992.
Montreal-born Daniel Grenier is a highly acclaimed, self-taught artist. Working in acrylics, his favorite subjects are fauna and pristine landscapes. This is his second picture book.
Geneviève Wright is a mother, translator, interpreter, and Reiki master living in the Rockies of Alberta with her two children and their dog, Louis.
