Good Resource with User Friendly Interface (Eventually)
St. Mary's Press has released a companion tool for their very popular Catholic Youth Bible. Containing all the features from the printed versions of the NAB and the NRSV, this CD allows you to search, copy and utilize the text of these fine bibles. "The Totally Searchable Catholic Youth Bible" is one of those must-have items for your ministry if you are doing any original work in developing your own prayer services, lesson plans, retreats or events. And you are doing your own program development to meet the needs of your parish and school? Of course you are! If you are someone who relies mostly on pre-printed worksheets or plans, then this release won't have much value for you.
It's difficult to find either of these specific translations in a computer form, so that factor helps to make this CD a good purchase. There is also access to the Press' "Good News, Day by Day" daily readings book. You may find these reflections a bit simplistic and this really is not a selling point for the CD.
There are some challenges. This CD requires the use of Adobe Acrobat Reader 6.0. Although Acrobat has really become a standard for document reading on computers, if you are not familiar with Adobe Reader, plan on spending some time learning to navigate these bibles. It also appears that the installer for Adobe Reader was not included on the disk. I'm rather familiar with computers but yet I could not find any way to install the reader from the CD. I'm using Windows 98SE and maybe it's just a fault of my older operating system. At any rate, I had to go to the Adobe Internet site and download (for free) the most recent version of the reader.
Once you have a working version of the reader, the program does have a "Need Help?" section to assist users in learning how to use the bible. It appears that this section of the CD was rather rushed. If you are a computer "newbie," you will find the directions rather sparse. Don't let this stop you from getting the CD, but plan on pulling aside one of your teenage computer wiz kids to ask them for help.
The benefits of the disk outweigh any learning curve you might have to experience, so don't let that prevent you from buying this product. Overall, "The Totally Searchable Catholic Youth Bible" will serve as a good addition to your resource shelf for your volunteers and staff.
