Gr. 3^-6, younger for use with an adult. This official publication of the American Kennel Club will be a favorite with dog lovers. It begins with a general section that advises readers on buying a dog, responsibilities, rewards, and how to match a dog with one's situation. It is less helpful, however, when it comes to actually choosing a breed. More than 100 dogs are profiled, with information on history, appearance, health, and "fun facts." Crisp color photographs accompany each article. Unfortunately, there is no information about a breed's weak points or liabilities, which is key to making a decision on getting a particular breed. A final section gives good advice about nutrition and health issues. Oh, yes, there are also plenty of plugs for the American Kennel Club, and the advantages of owning a purebred dog. Ilene Cooper

The only AKC-approved reference for children is the ultimate reference for those who love dogs! The book has information about the history and character of the breeds, as well as graphics showing where each breed originated, how big it is, and boxes containing a "fun fact" about each dog. Kids will also learn what they can do for and with their dogs -- everything from cleaning ears and giving baths to competing in Junior Showmanship or Agility.
