Product Description
Mandie Shaw, almost a teenager, is certain God no longer loves her as she watches her father being lowered into his grave. Mandie's move into a neighbor family's home, when her mother remarries, does not soften her grief. Her only comfort is the promise from her father's faithful Cherokee friend, Uncle Ned, to watch out for her and be a friend. Will Mandie be able to escape her new and nearly intolerable home situation? Will she find her long-lost family? Will the mysterious key unlock the door to the secret tunnel and her own family's history?

From AudioFile
Mandie's life unravels when her father dies. She lives in the early 1900s in North Carolina, and her only friend is a Cherokee Indian, Uncle Ned. Forbes admirably recreates the language of the Cherokees, black servants, and the other people Mandie encounters as she searches for her kin. This fascinating history lesson is replete with details about a tunnel used by the Cherokee, Bible quotes, and racial issues. The story twists and turns until Mandie finds her birth mother. Leppard's talent affords listeners an entertaining view of American history and biography not encountered often enough. About the Author
Lois began her first Mandie story when she was only eleven years old. But eventually the manuscript was tucked away in a drawer and forgotten. Lois went on to attend Furman University and studied music for several years in New York City where she and her sister sang professionally. Some years ago, Lois was prompted to pull that old manuscript out and began to work on Mandie's story-of her childhood in the South at the turn of the century and her Cherokee heritage. The rest is history and now the MANDIE BOOKS series have sales nearing six million copies! Lois writes from her home in South Carolina. Enthusiastic young fans fill her mailbox with their insightful responses to her stories.
