Editorial Reviews
Review
“Oldham's memoir supports the argument that the Confederacy declined largely because of internal (read political) rather than external (read military) pressures. As such, this book will prove of immediate interest to a wide variety of Civil War and southern historians and will wedge itself immediately into this ongoing historical debate.”—Christopher Phillips, coeditor of The Union on Trial: The Political Journals of Judge William Barclay Napton, 1829–1883
