About the Author
Stephen Quiller graduated from Colorado State University and has been painting full-time in watermedia since 1972. His paintings are represented in many corporate, public, and private collections nationwide. Quiller has produced three other books published by Watson-Guptill: With Barbara Whipple he co-authored Water Media Techniques and Water Media: Processes and Possibilities; his Color Choices, a book on color for painters, was published in 1989. Quiller conducts artist workshops throughout North America each year, and he has made a number of videotapes on watermedia and color, produced by Crystal Productions. He lives with his wife Marta and their two children, Christopher and Allison, in Creede, Colorado. His work is available at the Quiller in Creede and at the Mission in Taos, New Mexico.

One trick pony
This book contains a good color wheel and some useful discussion about material, but that's about it. The art is extremely idiosyncratic, stylized, and modern, and it is not very appealing. What's more, it appears that the author only has command of one style/genre, and that won't be of much help people who are trying to learn. Spend your money on The North Light Book of Acrylic Painting Techniques instead.

This book stinks
Personally, I really really dislike this book. But, that doesn't mean that everyone would not like this book.
Personally I am a realist. I want to create realistic pictures, and I've been doing that in pencils for awhile now. Now I want to move onto acrylics, and so I decided acrylics would be nice. They don't take forever to dry, i've seen some nice detailed stuff with them, and from the 2 paintings I've done without instruction I was pretty satisfied.
So, i figured I'd get a book to help me with the techniques. I figured that it would show various styles and the different techniques used to achieve the different results.
Nope, it's all impressionism. Very very impressionistic, at that. Now, if you're trying to learn how to paint impressionism, then this book is certainly for you. It goes very in depth on those techniques, covers all the different types of paints, mixed media, the difference between acrylics brands, gels, glosses, has various exercises, painting watercolor-ish, easel painting techniques, textures,...etc. I don't remember anything about painting people or skin tones though.

Not for the beginning acrylic artist
I found this book to be very helpful in experimenting with new ideas for my paintings. However, it is not for the beginning artist. This book shows various techniques but it won't show you how to paint a picture step by step
