Editorial Reviews
From Library Journal
An architect specializing in restorations, Schwin has slightly revised his 1994 book for those interested in the historically accurate recreation of American interiors dating from 1650 to 1960. For each style, he depicts the typical architecture of the home as well as an example of a room interior followed by a sample board showing the fabric, furniture, color, and accessories found there. A directory of sources includes helpful notations on whether they sell directly to consumers or through the trade. Interior design collections will find the American design styles useful since many design books concentrate on English and French styles. Libraries whose patrons are involved in historic preservation will find this book in demand.

From Booklist
Schwin has compiled a well-researched, attractive resource for decorating interiors in a wide range of American styles spanning the early colonial period to 1960. Schwin's practical assistance and insightful aesthetic counsel will shed light on the furnishings, color schemes, and fabrics associated with a specific period home. Among the clearly defined styles highlighted are the popular Georgian, Queen Anne, and "Bay Area Rustic." There is a veritable potpourri of ideas here, fitting within each stylistic framework to enhance and personalize living rooms, bedrooms, and, in some instances, kitchens. Appendixes offer valuable information on period colors, measuring and sketching out a project, and home decor sources for the serious do-it-yourself designer. Alice Joyce
