Kindergarten-Grade 2-Kate has a big problem. Bears come into her room every night and wake her from her dreams. Soon her wakefulness means that no one in the family is sleeping at all, and her exhausted mother calls the girl's grandmother for help. Nana offers a new solution to an age-old problem as well as an introduction to their family history. She tells Kate that her Scottish ancestors include a brave woman (also named Kate) who once chased away a menacing bear with some Gaelic words, and "-ever since then [bears] have all been scared of Wild Cameron Women." Armed with the same powerful words and a family tartan nightgown, the child gains control of her nightmares and everyone sleeps again. The story-within-a-story construct is a bit muddled. Also, children may be confused by the portrayal of the bears in the book. While Kate's parents believe they are nightmares, the illustrations show them as fierce and solidly real. Mills's artwork is strongest at depicting motion and in the retelling of the past Kate's heroism. The ruddy-faced contemporary child and her grandmother have an old-fashioned appearance that echoes that of their predecessors. An unsuccessful approach to a common problem.
