Good starter book and reference
This is the "pocket" version of the Encyclopedia of Aquarium plants (http://www.amazon.ca/Encyclopedia-Aquarium-Plants-Peter-Hiscock/dp/0764155210/ref=pd_ys_iyr4), (also by Peter Hiscock). It gives good advice on how to start a planted aquarium, and good information on lighting, substrates and supplemental fertilizers. It also has brief descriptions of some plant species and their growing and propagation requirements, as well as some plans for sample biotope tanks. This book contains slightly less info than the larger book.
