Editorial Reviews
From Amazon.com
If the night, a cat, and a crow are black, and snow, milk, and a goose are white, what is black and white? Turn the diminishing pages of this clever little board book to find out. As each alternating black-and-white page narrows in width, black and white stripes start appearing on the left side, until... surprise! The final page reveals the answer we've all been waiting for. The left side of each two-page spread has black text on white or white on black, depending on whether "the milk is white" or "the cat is black." Opposite, against changing jewel-toned backgrounds, is each lovely black or white item. Petr Horacek's lovely watercolor-and-crayon illustrations give this small book a rough-edged, friendly look. For more delicious color play, don't miss Horacek's companion volume, Strawberries Are Red. (Ages 2 to 5) --Emilie Coulter
From Publishers Weekly
Two new board books by Petr Hor cek burst with color, shrinking pages and clever designs. In What Is Black and White?, young readers learn that "the night is black" and "the goose is white" as the die-cut pages grow smaller. The last spread shows a zebra whose body is partly made up of the graduated pattern formed by the edges of the previous die-cut pages. Luscious fruit fills the shaped pages in Strawberries Are Red. A die-cut on the last spread reveals a fruit salad.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-In Strawberries, listeners are introduced to various fruits on double-page spreads that feature boldly hued watercolor-and-crayon artwork. "Strawberries are red./Oranges are orange." However, "Apples are green" may give some youngsters pause, as may "Grapes are purple." The final spread has a die-cut opening showing all of the fruits with the caption: "Look at all the colors in my fruit salad!" Similarly, in Black and White, listeners are told "The night is black./The snow is white." The pages become progressively smaller; on the final spread, the text reads: "The zebra is black and white" and the truncated edges form its stripes. The uncomplicated illustrations use bright energetic colors. Suitable choices for lap sharing and toddler programs.

Customer Reviews
Very Black and White
Being an art person, I find that there are tons of books on all the colors of the rainbow. Black and white are just as important to recognize as all of the other colors. It is refreshing to find a book with such a simple concept that is so well thought out - making it all the more impressive! The clever layout of the pages and the wonderful illustrations made this a must have, along with all of this authors other books, in our library and at our playgroup!
