Editorial Reviews
From Booklist
Reviewed with Laurie Lindop's Probing Volcanoes.
Gr. 5-8. These volumes in the Science on the Edge series look at "daredevil scientists," who put themselves at risk to study their volatile subjects. Both titles begin with an overview of the science. Later chapters introduce techniques for forecasting, tracking, and collecting data and then follow researchers into the field. The books feature lively, you-are-there accounts; profiles of researchers; quotes from scientists and witnesses; and advice for young people considering the respective fields. Volcanoes features a brief section on the history of volcanism, with a first-person description of the A.D. 79 eruption of Vesuvius that buried Pompeii. The color photos are often grainy and poorly reproduced, but children will still catch the awesome drama in the images. Student researchers will appreciate the useful back matter, including extensive source notes and further reading suggestions, and children reading for personal interest will be inspired by the scientists' "insatiable curiosity."
