PreSchool-Grade 1-When a parrot overhears the zookeepers saying that they must be careful with the new wombat from Australia, the bird assumes that they're afraid of it, and passes the information to the seal, with slight embellishment. As each animal tells its version of the story to another species, page folds reveal a variety of horrid creatures imagined. At the end, the cuddly little marsupial with a grin wonders why only the parrot is attending his crate opening. Words like "devour" and "enormous" are repeated and emphasized to ensure that listeners absorb their meanings. Soft-edged, double-page paintings convey mostly realistic portraits of the zoo residents. The lion's imagined monster may be a bit much for younger listeners, with slobbering white teeth that cover half a page. The endpapers provide a brief paragraph on the characteristics of the endangered wombat.
