Special painting techniques necessary for calligraphers are dealt with here including painting on vellum and paper, design, composition and use of paintings in manuscripts and broadsheets and on the painting of heraldic achievements. The use of different techniques for different types of colour, and the techniques necessary to achieve the texture of fur, feathers, petals etc are included. As well as explaining her own methods, Marie Angel includes a section on the work of contemporary scribes with their own notes on their varying techniques and methods of work. Many of the illustrations have been specially done for the book - others have been drawn from historical sources and the work of other scribes as well as from Marie Angel's own work.

Customer Reviews
One of the best calligraphic books.
Marie Angel wrote a masterpiece with this book. It is one of the few technical books I have ever read from beginning to end in one sitting. This book is a must for every serious calligrapher.
beautiful and useful
This book contains examples of some wonderful small-scale
paintings, along with advice on materials and techniques.
The painting subjects are mostly drawn from nature, with
very few historical examples. I'd recommend this book for
people who are interested in making their own calligraphy
or small book projects and would like to incorporate
natural subjects into their work. It is not a historical
treatment of calligraphy or illumination, but would be
a good addition for the library of those interested in
contemporary work.
