Product Description

Globe and Mail columnist and CityLine regular Lucy Waverman brings us home for dinner!

Beloved cookbook author Lucy Waverman is known for her recipes that sing with flavour and are a snap to prepare. Home For Dinner is her latest collection of over 200 extraordinary recipes that reflect contemporary tastes and trends — and don’t tax your time.

Home For Dinner takes its inspiration from the today’s desire to find time in busy schedules to cook great-tasting food. In a special section called “Fast and Slow,” Lucy serves up a raft of recipes that are easy to prepare but cook over a long period of time so that all their flavour and succulence is showcased. Try Umbrian Ragu, Osso Bucco or Braised Lamb Shanks with Middle Eastern Spices for a new dinnertime treat. Slow cooking is this century’s way to cook -- and these dishes can be enjoyed as family suppers or as easy dinners for entertaining.

As well as mouth-watering recipes for both simple and elegant main dishes, fabulous appetizers, silky soups and fruity desserts, Lucy suggests what to stock in your pantry for maximum flexibility, so you can cook without shopping. Also included are short recipes for flavourful rubs, chili pastes, marinades, vinegars and oils that make a dull dinner come alive.

Rounded out with useful cooking tips and techniques on every page, you’ll find it is easier than ever to cook and entertain at home.

Cooks who prepare the tantalizing recipes in Lucy Waverman's Home for Dinner may relax in their own homes while they eat, but they'll experience a world tour of exotic cuisines. Waverman, who is well-known to Canadians through her Globe and Mail column and television appearances, has collected more than 200 recipes ideal for casual entertaining or family dinners. The author emphasizes fresh ingredients, quick techniques, and easy preparation. Dishes range from a modest Yorkshire Sausage Jumble to an elegant French Roast Chicken and sizzling Goan Shrimp.

Waverman knows how to make recipes that work: Vietnamese Chicken, for example, is quick to make and splendidly flavoured with a sweet red pepper dipping sauce. Crusty Rice and Lamb Tagine really did--miraculously--unmould from the baking dish into an intensely fragrant golden column. Well-organized chapters include "Appetizers and Soups," "Fish and Seafood," "Poultry," "Meat," "Noodles, Grains and Rice," "Vegetables and Side Dishes," and "Desserts." An intriguing chapter entitled "Slow and Fast" is devoted to the slow food movement which encourages carefully preparing traditional foods and enjoying them over a long, social dinner.

While all of the book's recipes are simple even for a novice cook, assembling some of the ingredients may require a trip to a specialty gourmet shop: Items such as Israeli couscous, pomegranate molasses, and red Thai curry paste are not available on every grocer's shelf (although Waverman often offers substitutes). Glossy photographs show the mouth-watering potential of a few recipes, but most of the dishes are not illustrated. Still, it takes little imagination to picture the dreamy confections of Molten Brownie Soufflé and Grilled Bananas with Caramel Sauce. --Carolyn Leitch

Another Waverman classic!5
I'm proud to say that I own all of Lucy Waverman's cookbooks. Home for Dinner is her newest cookbook and I think, one of her best. The recipies are delicious and remarkably easy to make. They all seem suited to a `sit-down' dinner, but there are some that would be terrific for a buffet.
Home for Dinner proves that Lucy is the best!
