Editorial Reviews

From Amazon.com
The only problem with Robert Fisher's Escape to the Amalfi Coast is that it's addictive. Fisher is both a writer and a photographer, and his guide to the Italian coast bordering the Bay of Naples is rich in luscious photography and descriptive prose. Starting with the lure of Positano; exploring the sun-blessed coastal towns of Ravello, Sorrento, and Amalfi; and venturing as far as Naples and Capri, Fisher revels in the region's beauty--both natural and manufactured. He highlights the azure seascapes and scruffy mountain hikes, the palazzos where celebrities romp; the bougainvillea-bedecked nooks where lovers spoon; the grand restaurants serving truffles and foie gras; and the archetypal fishing villages, replete with whitewashed cottages, turquoise seas, and weathered dories. Thumb through those pictures, read about those villages, and your only focus becomes how soon you can go and how long you can stay. --Stephanie Gold

On this literary tour, Fisher invites readers to ogle at one of the world's bluest view and indulge in the peaceful nautical setting that inspired Greta Garbo and Wagner.

Most books on travel shelves are either long on the nitty-gritty and short on evocative photographs, or the other way around. We at Fodor's have aimed for a different balance in this slim volume, a book that's equal measure luscious magazine article and sensible, down-to-earth guidebook. Its pages, we hope, will inspire you as you plan your Amalfi Coast sojourn and guide you while you're on the road, to ensure that you have the best of all possible journeys.

We've combed every corner of the Amalfi Coast and the Bay of Naples in search of those quintessential places that embody the purest spirit of this miraculous coastline. It goes without saying that the roller-coaster ride down the legendary Amalfi Drive stood out among its pleasures. But there are many more: South of Naples, sparkling bays shelter lapis lazuli lagoons, and the sea melts into perpetually azure sky in ineffable vistas; anchored to the stair-stepped mountainsides are villas, gardens, convents dating from medieval time, and relics of once-omnipotent ancient Rome; fabled resorts and historic caravansaries are your shelter. And the views -- those perfect views -- are always with you.

Be prepared to embrace il dolce far niente -- the sweetness of doing nothing. Forget your projects and deadlines. And escape to the Amalfi Coast. You owe it to yourself.
