From the Author
Each year over 15 million American adults use some form of herbal remedy to treat a disease or condition. Most of these patients are using standard medical therapy at the same time. A significant number of these patients do not tell their physician about the herbs they are using. While most herbs seem to be relatively harmless, many are not. A number of herbs may also interact with medications the patients may be taking. Those who take herbs are generally doing so on the advice of their friends or family, or employees of health food stores; people who generally have little idea of the potential dangers.
Sadly, most physicians are not much better off. It is daunting enough to be familiar with the over 4000 drugs in the Physician's Desk Reference. Considering another 700+ herbal preparations is even more overwhelming. Small wonder physicians and patients engage in an herbal equivalent of "don't ask, don't tell."
The Pocket Guide to Herbal Remedies is designed to provide rational advice regarding the effectiveness and dangers of commonly used herbal remedies. Rather than rely on anecdotal evidence of efficacy, or theoretical considerations of the dangers of herbal remedies, the Pocket Guide is based on reviews of medical studies that involve numbers of people in clinical trials. It covers indications, effective doses, contraindications, adverse effects, and drug interaction of over 180 different herbs. This is a book that people who want to use herbal remedies should buy for their physicians, and learn to use on their own.
