From Amazon.com
This is the book that launched an empire. Martha Stewart's Entertaining was the world's first exposure to the doyenne of domestication. Entertaining offers recipes and menus for a number of different parties, including wedding receptions, afternoon teas, and a sumptuous Christmas dessert buffet. The book is lavishly illustrated, and much attention is paid to the dishes' presentation as well as their preparation. Even if you use it only as a springboard for your own party planning, Martha Stewart's Entertaining will provide fodder for many a celebration.

Inspiration for bored homemakers
This book is a staple in my kitchen. Do I cook all the upscale, gourmet recipes? I'd love to say yes, but in all honesty I haven't the time! I *have* tried the sugar cookies, and they went over well with my three little boys! The reason I love this book is that I can read a bit, look at the lovely pictures, and gain fresh inspiration to make my little home a lovelier place. Also, for any Martha-phile, this book is a good place to peek inside Martha's life and hear her thoughts for more than just a five minute segment on her show.
Don't make these recipes:
Pg 46 Roquefort Grapes: messy & time consuming. Grapes stuffed with cheese is a bad combination.
Pg 52 Phyllo Triangles: Very Greasy and time consuming, especially if you expect to serve it warm to waiting guests.
Pg 59 Baked New Potatoes: Cannot pick up garnishes with potatoes, even if cut up. Messy & ugly.
Pg 196 Pumpkin Molasses Pie: Tastes bad.
Pg 244 Pecan Pie: Never cooked, all sugar, awful.
5 stars for photography, 1 star for recipes.
A look at early Martha - well worth it
It's interesting seeing what Martha was doing before Asian influences became popular in the 1990s. As a result, the food here leans more towards french and Italian-influenced cuisine.
While I don't have the resources to put on a wedding luncheon for 250 people, this book is filled with common-sense good advice on planning parties and is full of inspiration.
