Hounds is a strong debut for Donaldson5
The job of authentically capturing the British Iron Ages and making it appealing to young readers is a tall task for even a seasoned author. But try doing that in your first novel. That's what Justin Donaldson attempts with The Hounds of Salisbury, and he succeeds.

In the book, four teenage history buffs are thrust into a faraway time period and cast as the saviours of an entire village. Though the plot is fantastic, Historical Archeology student Donaldson grounds the setting in such well-researched greenery that it seems appropriate. And the author has the well-utilised advantage of being young himself; his underage protagonist seems especially down-to-earth. Many other books of this nature from older authors have their facts checked and double-checked but have no perspective on the young characters confronted with it. Hounds does.

Literature for teen readers typically panders, but Donaldson avoids this, drawing readers into an experience that feels like a movie, without stooping to the intellectual depths of most movies. The constant action and deep plot spring off of the page, and the tone and language is more reminiscent of Dan Brown than J.K. Rowling.

It's easy to fall into the world Donaldson creates in The Hounds of Salisbury. Is it ambitious to expect young teens to take on a book of this lengths? Yes, but the ones who do will be rewarded with a book of significant artistic merit and, most importantly, a great read.

Terrific story for all ages5
The Hounds of Salisbury is a riveting tale of an ordinary teenage boy, struggling with insecurities and self-doubt, who, along with a group of friends, is magically transported back in time to face the biggest challenge of his life. Along the way, he finds the self-confidence and courage from within to rise to be a leader.
I was tremendously impressed with this young author who has written a detailed history lesson and disguised it with an entertaining and exhilarating tale of adventure. Attention to detail is what distinguishes good historical fiction. The Hounds of Salisbury is choked full of interesting facts and details of what life would have been like for the people of ancient Britain.
It would make a terrific movie!

A Refreshing Read5
The hounds of Salisbury is a good book. It takes the reader back in time to the age of the Celts and shows how they survived in their brutal age. The main character Morgan and his friends who strangely find them selfs in the age of ancient Britannica and are brought into a tribe that sees them as the chosen ones who are to save them from a ruthless Celt warlord and his massive armies bent on conquering the Northern tribes. This book is easy to read and is very enjoyable to read.
