About the Author
There’s no denying that kids love Clifford®. The Big Red Dog® has been a favorite since Norman Bridwell created him over 40 years ago. "I was working as a commercial artist in New York City. There wasn’t much work, so I made some sample pictures and took them to several publishers. They all rejected my work. But one editor suggested that I try writing a book of my own to illustrate. I had done a painting of a little girl with a big red dog. That seemed like a funny idea, so I made up a story about them. I increased the dog’s size from as big as a horse to as big as a house. My wife named the dog Clifford, and we named the little girl Emily Elizabeth after our daughter. In three days I had written the story and drawn the pictures for Clifford The Big Red Dog. When Scholastic called and said they wanted the book, I was stunned." Bridwell, who grew up in Kokomo, Indiana, lives now on Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, with his wife, Norma. A good childrens book3
When I was young I would sit down and read this book. I always loved it however the book I have is a little different. The Title, and story are the same but I have a book that is mostly black and white with few colors. It's in a small rectangular shape, and has no copy right date. It's very interesting. However this is a cute book for any child, and has good illustrations that would grab any kids attention.

Preschooler loves it, but it's not this parent's favorite2
Although my daughter loves this book, I was a little disappointed to find that the plot of this book is a competition between Emily E and her new neighbor, to see who has the best dog. Of course, each girl concludes that her dog is best.

The book does show how competitive comparisons can be damaging, but along the way it may leave the wrong impression on your child.

A great book for beginning readers!5
My first grade daughter really enjoyed this book. It was a very challenging book for her level but she was able to get through it. It is a wonderful story about a new girl in town with her dog. The new girl, Martha, loved showing off her dog, Bruno. Clifford, of course, could do every trick Bruno could do....better. I loved the fact that my daughter pointed out to me that Martha should not have been bragging about her dog. My daughter kept asking me why Martha was showing off. It gave me a wonderful opportunity to discuss this with her. Not only was the book good reading for my daughter, it provided a great life lesson as well.
